Well designed time attendance machine always consider the possibility of power loss in their operation. Be sure the transaction data storage is not loss or damaged when power suddenly lost. Some time and attendance machines includes internal UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). When the power loss these machines still able to work for enough time to give you chance to restore main power. Of course, if the machine does not have internal UPS, you can use an external one.
Some machines include sort of access control system. For example to open entrance door for valid user. In this case, door lock module should have power backup too. When main power drops, the door can still be open or closed.

Time and attendance machine should strong enough to operate 24 hours 7 days a week. Most of the time, the machine is in standby condition. To minimize power consumption and to optimize machine life time, good microcontroller programmer should optimize the use of standby/idle/sleep mode microcontroller facility. Time and attendance machine will enter standby mode when there is no activity in specified length of time. And it will be quickly wake up when activity is detected.
